Coconut Milk is a white liquid made by blending coconut with water, or the soaking of grated coconut inside cheesecloth and squeezing out the liquid. It is incorrect to refer to the liquid inside a freshly opened coconut as coconut milk – it is properly known as coconut water, or sometimes coconut juice. MAKING COCONUT MILK IN A BLENDER
Ingredients
1 coconut, along with the coconut water found within
2 cups distilled water
Directions
Break coconut into chunks, place in blender with water, and blend till smooth, strain, and it is ready for use. Options: When making coconut milk in a blender, other items that may be added for different flavors would include one or all of the following: 1 banana peeled; juice from ½ of a lime; juice from an orange; vanilla extract, or a 1-inch piece from fresh vanilla bean.
MAKING COCONUT MILK USING THE CHEESECLOTH METHOD
Directions
Take one fresh coconut. Open it by whatever method preferred and reserve the coconut water. Grate the coconut finely, or process in a food processor with an S blade. Put the grated coconut into cheesecloth and soak in ½ cup warm distilled water for a few minutes. Remove the soaked grated coconut in the cheesecloth from the bowl and squeeze the liquid through the cheesecloth and into a bowl. Repeat the process until you have a yield of about 3 cups of thin coconut milk. Then add the reserved coconut water and ENJOY!
