Like something out of a science fiction thriller, genetically modified organisms (GMO) are having horrifying effects in lab tests. Genetically modified corn engineered to be resistant to Roundup herbicide (a Monsanto brand) caused rapidly accelerating tumors in both male and female lab rats over the course of 2 years. And these are no small tumors. Search "lab rat gmo" in a Google image search and you'll see why the world is suddenly up in arms over this French study. "Females developed large mammary tumors
our emphasis added> almost always more often than and before controls," the study quotes. Not to mention that "the sex hormonal balance was modified by GMO and Roundup treatments." Oh, and don't forget "very significant kidney chronic deficiencies."
Meanwhile, male rats developed liver congestions and necrosis and they "presented 4 times more large palpable tumors than controls which occurred up to 600 days earlier."
Read that finding again... 600 days earlier. The study itself was only 2 years long (730 days) which means the tumors began growing within the first few months of the test!
It's enough to make you think twice about eating genetically modified food, especially if it is engineered to be resistant to a certain herbicide, like the Roundup resistant corn used in this study.
When a "Roundup Ready" crop is sprayed with Roundup herbicide, everything else dies, but the genetically engineered crop lives. There are many herbicide companies each with their own "brand" of GM crop that is resistant to their company's herbicide.
FYI: Multiple applications of herbicide are common practice in herbicide-resistant GMO crops... once before the plant emergesThis means the herbicide can be sprayed on the crop over and over again without killing it — increased herbicide toxicity is all but certain with these types of crops! The shocking findings of this French study suddenly make "Prop 37" a crucial election decision. If you haven't heard about Prop 37, you will soon. It's a proposition before Californian voters that calls for mandatory labeling of GMO foods. And if California votes it in, likely the entire country will follow.
