Is a plant-based (vegan) diet the best? Has it always been — and will it always be? A new study from Jordan seems to substantiate that statement. There, amongst one of the longest-established civilizations on Earth (which has surely seen omnivore and herbivore diets come and go), researchers are discovering new evidence that "foods do certainly play an important role in human health" and that "chronic diseases including diabetes, hypertension, and obesity were more prevalent among non-vegetarians compared to vegetarian respondents." The subject of whether the plant-based Hallelujah Diet is a "be all, end all" way of life — wherever or whenever one happens to live — is an interesting one and one that often sparks lively debate. Yes, God's original diet for mankind was a plant-based diet (Genesis 1:29). Yet, one of the most popular questions we get is, "Didn't Jesus eat fish? I want to do whatever He did." Many of his disciples were fishermen, so it would seem likely. But really, it's not the point... The point is that we tend to forget that diets in Jesus' time were not exactly ideal, either. After all, He was constantly healing the sick! Surely some (if not most) of this sickness was due to unbalanced diets, poor sanitation, or a combination of both. Not to mention that we don't live in the same world He did. In Jesus' day, there were no pesticides or herbicides, chlorinated or fluoridated water, automotive pollution, GMO plants or fish, processed foods, electromagnetic pollution, over-fished oceans, factory farming, unnatural feedlots, ultra-high gluten grains, etc. Comparing what Jesus ate to modern diets is like comparing apples to oranges. They're not the same thing. He did, however, as the Creator of the universe (John 1:1-3), provide us with the model diet to equip our bodies to deal with modern times, way back in Genesis 1:29. With all of our modern challenges, it only makes sense to adopt His original diet as a nutritional escape from our health-deteriorating world! So, what would Jesus eat if He lived among us today? By the Holy Spirit (the very spirit of Christ within each of us), He inspired the apostle John to write to a fellow believer named Gaius, saying, "I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health." He wants us to be healthy — so that we can do His will! A return to His original diet, upon which The Hallelujah Diet is based, seems to be the best way to equip the human body to maintain health. It worked for the first inhabitants of the Earth (there is no biblical record of sickness from creation up to the flood), and, according to research, it works today for the people of Jordan. Whether The Hallelujah Diet is best for everyone is an unanswered question.
