Report: Death rates from cancers keep dropping

Finding out that you or a loved one has a potentially terminal illness, such as cancer, is devastating. And although it seems like the end of the road is near, it is important to look to God for peace and reassurance. Staying faithful is a must – trust in the Lord and you will live a long, prosperous life for as long as He intends.

Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Cancer death rates show significant decrease

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the U.S., not far off from heart disease. But the Report to the Nation, developed by the American Cancer Society, found that cancer death rates are steadily decreasing and have been since 1991. In fact, more than 1.7 million cancer deaths have been prevented between 1991 and 2012.

Overall cancer death rates have dropped for both men and women

Due to advances in cancer prevention, treatment, early detection and smoking cessation, the U.S. has seen fewer deaths caused by lung, breast, prostate and colon and rectum cancers. In the last decade, overall cancer death rates have dropped by 1.8 percent per year in men and 1.4 percent per year for women. However, according to the National Cancer Institute, the report found that trends in liver cancer contrasted with the rates of all other cancers. Death rates caused by liver cancer actually increased, and the rate of liver cancer incidence has also risen. The authors reported an association between liver cancer and the hepatitis C virus infection as well as hepatitis B virus infection.

“We have the knowledge and tools available to slow the epidemic of liver cancer in the U.S., including testing and treatment for HCV, hepatitis B vaccination, and lowering obesity rates,”

said Dr.Otis W. Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society.

“We hope that this report will help focus needed attention and resources on liver cancer.”

Obesity, Type 2 diabetes and excessive alcohol use can also be associated with liver cancer, according to the NCI. Every year, the Report to the Nation is released by the American Cancer Society, the CDC , the NCI and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries to educate the public on cancer awareness, protection and prevention.
