A 2012 study is proving that "you don't have to be sick" — no matter how old you are. The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center has found that being physically fit in mid-life is not just about delaying disease later in life, but avoiding disease altogether! Dr. Jarett Berry, the study's senior author, says, "We've determined that being fit is not just delaying the inevitable, but it is actually lowering the onset of chronic disease in the final years of life." The study pretty much proved that you get out of life what you put into it, or as Rev. Malkmus often quotes from Proverbs 26:2, "the curse causeless shall not come." In fact, when middle-aged people in the study increased their fitness levels by 20%, their chance of developing chronic disease dropped by 20%... talk about crystal clear cause and effect! And that wasn't just an immediate benefit. The effect of walking, jogging, or running in younger years lingered for decades, translating to not only more years of life, but healthier years and all but avoiding chronic disease until the very end of life! Chronic diseases that were evaded include congestive heart failure, Alzheimer's disease, and colon cancer. Not bad for getting up a half-hour earlier to go for a run, huh? These people were not doing anything of Olympic proportions to get results, either. All it takes is a little bit of effort and the desire to be healthy.
