What is Lactobacillus anyway, and what can it do for our health? We are so glad and excited you asked! Let's learn why we love Lactobacillus and all it can do for our health! What is Lactobacillus? Lactobacillus species are probiotics, also known as the good bacteria commonly found in our digestive and urinary tracts. Other names include Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus, acidophilus. Lactobacilli make lactic acid by breaking down carbohydrates, mainly by breaking down milk sugar lactose. It does this by producing an enzyme called lactase. Lactobacilli grow particularly well in milk and foods made from milk and are the bacteria responsible for 'souring' milk too. Many, many different strains can be found in milk foods and the intestinal tract. Various Lactobacillus species and strains have been extensively researched and studied as probiotics, and evidence has shown they may be strongly linked to several health benefits. There are many different strains of L. acidophilus, and they can each have other effects on your body. In addition to being found in milk products, for those that are lactose intolerant or avoiding dairy, Lactobacillus can be found in our Hallelujah Diet Oral Health Probiotics, 30 Billion CFU, and our Children's Probiotic 24 Billion CFU. You can also add Lactobacillus to your diet by eating several fermented foods such as sauerkraut, miso, and tempeh. What Can Lactobacillus do to Benefit Health? Gum Disease More than 700 kinds of bacteria can live within the mouth, some are harmful, and some are helpful—and as long as they are in balance, the "good" bacteria can keep the "bad" bacteria from harming you. However, when that balance shifts, the harmful bacteria can overwhelm the helpful bacteria, leading to gum disease. What triggers the harmful bacteria in your mouth? Researchers are still trying to pinpoint the exact triggers, but some of them can include: • Not taking care of or being able to take care of your teeth and gums properly. This lets the bad bacteria multiply. • Having a weak immune system. This can affect the way the bacteria in your mouth relate to one another, giving the harmful an advantage. • Dry mouth. Your saliva has substances that help fight harmful bacteria. If you suffer from dry mouth, whether naturally or from medicines, painkillers, or even decongestants, this can affect your saliva. An imbalance of bacteria within your mouth can affect your body's defenses, keeping your white blood cells from killing the harmful bacteria. In turn, the bad bacteria can cause gum inflammation, and gum inflammation can give off chemicals that feed the bad bacteria, which then multiply. Too much harmful bacteria inflaming your gums can start to eat away at the bone that anchors your teeth. If that goes on long enough, your gums and the bone that supports your teeth can become ruined, and eventually, you lose teeth. Additionally, all of the above can set you up for further tooth decay and bad breath and lead to oral cancer. Some studies even suggest that too many harmful bacteria within the mouth may move to other parts of the body, leading to issues like diabetes, heart disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Can Help Reduce and Prevent Diarrhea Diarrhea affects people of all ages for several reasons. One of those includes bacterial infections. Severe and chronic diarrhea can become dangerous if it lasts for a long time, as it results in fluid loss and can lead to, in some cases, dehydration. A number of studies have shown that probiotics like L. acidophilus may help prevent and reduce diarrhea associated with various diseases. (1) Can Help Improve Symptoms of IBS IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome affects up to one in five people in certain countries. While more research is needed to understand the cause of IBS, research now suggests that ensuring you are eating foods with probiotics or taking a probiotic supplement could help lessen IBS symptoms. (2) Can Help with Weight Loss The bacteria within our intestines help control food digestion and other bodily processes, influencing our weight. In a study published in March 2020 on the Scientific Reports website, a randomized controlled study revealed that supplementation of lactobacilli and bifidobacterial to overweight and obese adults helped reduce body weight and improve well-being. (3) Researchers believe that probiotics may help promote weight loss by: • Increasing the amount of short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria, which increases fatty acid oxidation and decreases fat storage. • Decreasing inflammation by reducing the abundance of lipopolysaccharide producers. LPS are bacterial toxins that can cause health issues if they reach the bloodstream. • Help influence appetite and metabolism • Reduce fat accumulation • Regulate pro-inflammatory organs • Improve insulin sensitivity While science, research, and experts are still investigating the effects of weight loss and probiotics, the connection is auspicious.
