Dr. Bredesen, of the Buck Institute, UCLA and author of The End of Alzheimer’s, identified about 36 different metabolic factors that contribute to mild cognitive impairment, leading to Alzheimer’s disease. Prevention and reversal of cognitive impairment requires dealing with all of the factors that are not normal/optimal in a person.

The team of researchers led by Dr. Dale Bredesen has found 3 basic types of Alzheimer’s Disease:

Inflammatory Alzheimer’s
Atrophic Alzheimer’s
Toxic Alzheimer’s

Type 1 Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by low-grade inflammation throughout the body. As we burn hydrogen to make energy, sparks fly out (free-radicals) and need quenched so they don’t damage us. Without our full network of antioxidant protection we burn up in under-controlled fire, like an engine without a cooling system. This burning is manifested in pain, aches, slow-healing wounds, brain fog, and a lousy attitude. You could call this under-controlled fire “metabolic inflammation.” And in those carrying one or two copies of the ApoE4 gene, this metabolic inflammation can lead to cognitive decline and eventually to Alzheimer’s. Ridding the body of metabolic inflammation is the key to turning around this type of Alzheimer’s.

Type 2 Alzheimer’s disease is more like a wasting away disease. In these cases people are low in hormones (thyroid, adrenal, sex hormones, vitamin D) and factors that promote the growth, survival and differentiation of neurons. Better cellular nutrition and hormone balancing is helpful in supplying the body what it needs to heal itself in this case.

Type 3 Alzheimer’s disease tends to strike younger and is due to heavy exposure to chemicals, pesticides or toxins at work or in some bad environment that their body could not detoxify. Detoxification is what helps most in these cases of Alzheimer’s.
